PADDLE STEAMER FLAGSHIP, COMING TO PLYMOUTH

The National Flagship of the Year 2024, and world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, the PS Waverley is making its long-anticipated return to Plymouth next week.

The PS Waverley was voted by the National Historic Ships UK and the official voice for historic vessels in the UK.

The iconic vessel arrives in Plymouth on Friday, 30th August, and Westward Shipping News will capture some of the first images in the Sound on our live webcam.

As part of Cattewater Harbour Commissioners celebrating 150 years in the city, the PS Waverley will be playing host on a special voyage across the Sound, South Cornwall coastline, and taking in views of the River Tamar as the sun sets.

Saturday, August 31, the PS Waverley will meet up with the Kingswear Castle and the UK’s only coal-fired paddle steamer, on the River Dart.

This first-ever encounter between the two iconic vessels on the River Dart promises to be a unique experience, with the Kingswear Castle sailing to meet Waverley at the river’s entrance.

On Saturday, August 31, the Waverley will embark on a special cruise to Start Point, returning to Dartmouth for the spectacular Dartmouth Royal Regatta Fireworks.

Passengers can enhance their experience says the Waverley marketing brochure, by taking the Dartmouth Steam Railway from Paignton to connect with the evening cruise.

And on Sunday, September 1, the crew at Westward Shipping News are booked on the voyage from the Barbican Landing Stage to Rame Head and out towards the Eddystone Lighthouse and back.

Following the PS Waverley’s successful 2023 season, an independent Economic Impact Assessment revealed that passengers aboard the Waverley contributed to a £11.6 million boost to the UK economy.

Sir Timothy Laurence, husband of Princess Anne, is the patron of the PS Waverley.
