EXPLORING THE NAVAL TREASURES – AT THE DEVONPORT NAVAL HERITAGE CENTRE

Westward Shipping News will be running a series of articles on one of Britain’s unique naval heritage museums, the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, in Plymouth, coming soon on our website.

The hidden gem is run by volunteers, and chronicles the development of Western Europe’s biggest dockyard and its pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy in war and peace, and its place at the heart of the nation’s sea power over many centuries.

If you’re into uniforms, badges, cannons, ages of sail and steam, or the finest naval crockery, or more serious exhibits like the awe-inspiring Warspite Gallery, and other galleries that cover Devonport’s history including the submarine HMS Courageous, and many more.

Lead coordinator Paul Dunlop runs a team of 30 dedicated volunteers that keeps the site running.

Westward Shipping News was given a tour of the collections and galleries around the historic buildings that house the museum centre, and many stories and pictures will follow.

The centre is free to visit and typically opens from March to October and more information can be found on their web portal: https://devonportnhc.wordpress.com/
