One of the Royal Navy’s most unusual vessels RFA Proteus was spotted on our live webcams this morning at the Plymouth breakwater and conducting a boat transfer with RFA Tideforce at buoy.
The 98.1-metre Proteus operates in a number of roles, notably being a platform for Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicles and a testbed for new specialist capabilities, required for monitoring waters important to British interests.
The 6,000 tonne vessel was formerly named MV Topaz Tangaroa between 2017–2022, and was used as a platform supply vessel operated by P&O Maritime Logistics, and sold to the Ministry of Defence in January 2023, before formally entering service in October that year.
