NEW HYBRID CARGO SHIP – THE AASFOSS

General cargo ship the AASFOSS (inbound) to the Plymouth Cattewater Wharves this afternoon, and a hybrid built vessel sailing under the flag of Norway.

The world’s first hybrid cargo ship docked at the Port of Plymouth in May this year MV Aasfjell, and her sister ship MV Aasfoss both setting an example for the future of green shipping around the globe, says Plymouth Harbourmaster Captain Richard Allan.

The ships were built for Aasen Shipping, has a hybrid propulsion system, which allows it to run from 339 kWh battery power only while in port. The makers estimate that this will cut fuel consumption by 400 tons per year. The main engine and hull design have also been optimised for maximum fuel efficiency.
