HMS TYNE TRACKS RUSSIAN SUBMARINE

A familiar visitor to Plymouth HMS Tyne was tasked to track a Russian submarine off the south coast of England as part of a NATO mission to shadow Russian vessels, together with a Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter.

The Portsmouth-based HMS Tyne is River-class offshore patrol vessel and was deployed as part of a wider NATO operation to shadow Kilo-class submarine Krasnodar as it made its surfaced journey back to Russia from the eastern Mediterranean.

The mission comes two weeks after HMS St Albans and HMS Mersey separately shadowed Russian vessels through the English channel.

HMS Tyne’s Operations Officer, Lieutenant Bailey Denyer said: “Activations like the one we’ve seen on this patrol to track Krasnodar are our bread and butter – defending UK sovereignty and that of our NATO allies is at the very heart of what the Royal Navy does,” he said.
