GEOTECHNICAL VESSEL LEAVES PLYMOUTH

Hundreds of visitors came and explored the top spec ship the Fugro Frontier that was berthed at the Barbican Landing Stage.

The 53m-long research vessel was on a two day visit to the city and registered with the Dutch HQ company Fugro, which operates a key training base at Turnchapel Wharf.

The research vessel was en route from the Irish Sea to the Netherlands and Fugro staff in Plymouth asked if it could stop at Britain’s Ocean City to give its students an opportunity to see onboard and check out the advanced technology it contains.

The vessel uses the latest sonar, sensors and seismic surveying equipment, for its work, and also powerful magnetometers to seek out the vast amount of unexploded bombs and mines still left in the waters around Europe after World War II.

Our live webcam spotted the ship leaving the Sound this morning in pretty choppy waters en route to the Netherlands.
