WORLD CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SOUND

The Prestigious World Cadet Championship is taking place in the amphitheatre of Plymouth Sound, where some of the world’s best young sailors are competing to be crowned the ‘World Cadet Champion’.

The @TheIslandTrust topsail training schooner the JOHANNA LUCRETIA making its grand exit out of the Sound this afternoon through a maze of small boats.

The UK Cadet Class Association event has brought together 200 sailors aged between 7 and 17 from many countries to compete at the highest level of youth sailing, and some of the spectacular races will be captured on our Westward Shipping News live webcam.

The international showcase of 100 teams from as far away as Australia and Argentina are competing for their individual nations that started last Saturday until August 9.

The event, held at the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre and hosted by Plymouth Youth Sailing Club, is bringing together youngsters taking part in a series of races.

The event’s opening ceremony will take place this Friday at 6 p.m. when all 100 international teams will take to the water for a parade around the Mountbatten Breakwater, with races taking place on Sunday, 4 August, with events every day until Friday, 9 August.
