WELCOME BACK TO THE OOSTERSCHELDE

Back on the 15th August 2023, Plymouth waved goodbye to the magnificent Dutch tall ship the Oosterschelde that was accompanied by a handful of small boats on its journey out of the Sound.

The Dutch schooner was on a 2-year conservation mission, DARWIN200, following in the wake of HMS Beagle, with the Oosterschelde sailing over 40,000 nautical miles across the globe to recreate Darwin’s voyage of scientific discovery.

Westward Shipping News captured the spectacular tall ship sailing out of the Sound and is due back in Plymouth this weekend in time for the city’s festive lights switch-on dated November 15.

The vessel was built in 1917 and meticulously restored in the late 1980s and early 1990s and will berth at the Barbican Landing Stage.

Local people will be able to look on board the three-mast tall ship on Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm.

Built in 1917 and meticulously restored between 1988 and 1992, the Oosterschelde is one of the last remaining historic tall ships in the world.

The ship’s Captain Gerben Nab said: “We’re very excited about visiting the beautiful historic port of Plymouth again, after the warm and enthusiastic welcome we’ve had upon the start of the Darwin200 Global Voyage in August 2023.”

No registration is needed in advance to visit the historic sailing vessel.
