VINTAGE STEAMER BACK IN THE SOUTH WEST

Budding shipping enthusiasts from around the South West’s coastal towns and Plymouth are getting excited that the last surviving ocean-going paddle steamer, the PS Waverley, will be returning to the region this summer.

And once again, the historic steamer will be returning to Plymouth in May and taking passengers on evening trips to Rame, Cawsand, Whitsand, and across the Sound to Eddystone Lighthouse and back.

The team at Westward Shipping News was lucky to undertake the evening cruise back in the summer of 2004 from the Barbican Landing Stage.

Media releases from Waverley Excursions Limited said the PS Waverley will be in Devon & Cornwall from the 22nd of May until the 25th of May.

Bookings are now open for the Plymouth and South West cruises on their website: https://waverleyexcursions.co.uk/

The iconic vessel was launched in 1947, and since 1975, the vessel has been operated on a not-for-profit basis by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society charity.

The ship features open promenade decks, a self-service dining saloon, period lounges, a gift shop, and an open engine room.

It can hold about 750 people, and in 2003 ‘National Historic Ships UK’ listed the ship as a ‘vessel of pre-eminent national importance’.

Once again, www.westwardshippingnews.com live streaming webcam will be the first to see the steamer as it arrives in the Sound.
