VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY ON PLYMOUTH HOE

Plymouth’s show window to the world will be centre stage to mark the 80th anniversary of VE DAY, or Victory in Europe Day, on Thursday, 8th May.

It’s almost 80 years since the wartime leader Winston Churchill announced the end of the Second World War in Europe and Germany’s surrender to the Allies.

A programme of events will be staged on the famous Hoe Promenade, Park, and Royal Citadel and will start with a flag raising ceremony at the Belvedere Flag Pole.

Members of the armed forces were spotted on our live webcam today rehearsing for the poignant ceremony.

A full Parade of Standards and Royal Navy Guard will be on show and can be seen on our live webcam pages: www.westwardshippingnews.com

The day of events will also include gunfire from the historic Citadel, evening concerts, and ending with a Sunset Guard ceremony and lighting of a beacon.

Local communities across the city will be holding street parties and remembering iconic celebrations like the one on the Barbican in 1945.

Kevin Kelway, media blogger, said, “We have been running images and family hero stories celebrating the roles our families made in the Second World War.”
