THE RETURN OF THE PS WAVERLEY

The iconic PS Waverley, the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer, is returning Westward again next week.

Shipping enthusiasts will once again hear the wonderful sound of paddle beats in Plymouth, South Devon, and Cornwall.

The Waverley will be in the region from August 28th until September 1st and will call at the Barbican Landing Stage, Torquay, a first since the 1980s, Dartmouth, Fowey, Falmouth, and Penzance.

Our live webcam streaming service will capture the first sighting of the Waverley in the Sound like last year, and was visiting the city to celebrate 150 years of the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners.

The crew at Westward Shipping News were thrilled to sail on the Waverley on the Sunset Cruise to Whitsand Bay, Cawsand Bay, and the trip out to Eddystone Lighthouse on a packed vessel.

The Waverley was built in Glasgow for the London and North Eastern Railway, launched in October 1946, and entered service on June 16, 1947.

She is the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer and was gifted to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society in 1974 for £1.

The PS Waverley is now fully restored to her original 1940s style, and since 1975, she has operated in preservation, carrying more than six million passengers.

The ship is operated on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis and is British-registered for up to 780 passengers.
