THE NAO VICTORIA GALLEON ARRIVES

The replica Spanish galleon, the Nao Victoria, finally arrives in the Sound this morning and is escorted by a Plymouth pilot boat to the Barbican Landing Stage.

The majestic sailing ship on a European tour was delayed because of bad weather in the Channel and will be visiting for the weekend, where many visitors have booked to look around the ship.

The original Nao Victoria was the first-ever ship to circumnavigate the world from 1519 to 1522 and was commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

It was one of five ships, dubbed the Spice Army, to attempt the maritime feat but was the only one to complete the journey.

The original vessel was lost at sea in the 1570s, and the replica was built in Spain in 1991 by six carpenters and five assistants in eight months.

Since 2007 the Spanish galleon has been managed by the Nao Victoria Foundation.
