Plymouth marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with events that began with a flag-raising ceremony in the morning to musical shows and dancing in the afternoon, to a Sunset Guard Ceremony and beacon lighting that was a burning of hope and reflection.

It ended with the stunning lighting up of the Belvedere flagpole that was visible across the Sound.

Victory in Europe Day 80 ended in Plymouth tonight with the lighting of a beacon that was a symbolic fire of hope and reflection in marking a day, a war generation, and a proud city that remembered the resilience, sacrifices made, and Plymouth’s role in the Second World War.

The Belvedere flagpole was illuminated in light at the end of day that in (VE) Day celebrations that will live in the memories of many.
