THE DIVERSE WORK OF PLYMOUTH’S TUG BOATS

The diverse work of Plymouth’s tug boats was on show this afternoon when they were towing a huge Caisson Dock Gate across the Sound, and dodging a congested waterfront of leisure craft enjoying the Summer weather.

The Caisson Dock gate was being towed to Victoria Wharf.

A Caisson Dock Gate is a large floating iron or steel box. It can be flooded to seat the Caisson in the opening of the dock to close it, or pumped dry to float it and allow it to be towed clear of the dock.
