The UK cruise industry is a major driver of economic growth and coastal prosperity, and contributes over £5.8 billion annually to the British economy and supporting 60,000 jobs nationwide.

More than six months ago, the UK Government in partnership with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), and the UK Chamber of Shipping, launched the UK Cruise Growth Plan.

The landmark collaboration aims to strengthen the UK’s maritime and tourism sectors through sustained growth, innovation, and shared commitments.

Launched in September 2025, the plan provides a strategic roadmap to position the UK as a premier destination for cruise tourism and a global leader in sustainable and digital maritime practices.
The framework looks to focus on key priorities including:
- Workforce development and skills for the green transition
- Safety, security, and accessibility
- Enhanced infrastructure at UK ports
- Sustainable growth that benefits coastal communities
The initiative encourages private investment, integrates cruise into national tourism strategies, and fosters collaboration across government departments and devolved administrations, and the importance of Cruise Tourism to the UK.
A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE NUMBERS:
- £5.8 billion annual contribution to the UK economy (direct, indirect, and induced output)
- 60,000 jobs supported nationwide (based on 2023 Oxford Economics research)
- Over 50 UK ports visited by cruise ships each year
- More than 2 million UK residents take a cruise annually
- Over 2 million day visits by cruise guests to UK ports every year
- 60% of cruise guests return to destinations they have visited

The above summary highlights the cruise industry sector and the vital role it is boosting our local economies. But especially creating employment in ports and related maritime sectors, and enhancing the UK’s appeal as both a home market, and global attraction for overseas operators and tourists.
