Our live webcam spotted HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship, outbound in the Sound today.

The British Navy’s association with the Antarctic goes back to the early days of exploration of the great continent in the 19th Century with Captain Robert Falcon Scott, arguably the most famous polar explorer.
Working in the Antarctic, the ship supports scientific research, wildlife mapping, researching changing climate and the continent’s shifting waters.
This work is carried out by the Scott Polar Research Institute and the British Antarctic Survey – both based in Cambridge.
