The King’s Harbour Master (KHM), Plymouth, Rob Giles, has issued a ‘Navigational Warning’ to local mariners that due to ongoing maintenance works the Breakwater Lighthouse and its accompanying foghorn are unreliable.

Plymouth’s Breakwater lighthouse is an essential aid to maritime shipping on the western tip of the 1.5 mile-long Breakwater and has intermittently faltered, and the foghorn signals cannot be depended on.
The latest advisory Navwarn 033/25, supersedes an earlier notice from 25 July (Navwarn 032/25), which solely concerned the light being unlit.
Mariners navigating in the Sound are urged to exercise heightened caution during this period of diminished navigational assistance.

The Plymouth Breakwater was constructed between 1812 and 1841 to protect the harbour of Plymouth.
Plymouth Breakwater was considered England’s biggest endeavour during that time and was designed by Sir John Rennie and constructed with granite rocks from local quarries.
