NEW PASSENGER BRIDGE, AT MILLBAY DOCKS

Over the centuries, Plymouth’s Millbay Docks has been at the forefront of the city’s history, development, and maritime gateway across the globe.

The historic docks have just passed another significant milestone in its £23 million transformation works, and the first section of a new Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridge on the West Wharf has been installed, with the remaining sections due in early 2025.

Associated British Ports (ABP) is the UK’s leading ports group that runs the docks and says when operational in 2025, the new state-of-the-art bridge will help streamline the embarkation process for foot passengers using Brittany Ferries and cruise liner companies looking to berth at West Wharf.

Millbay Docks has been a key port for Brittany Ferries for over 40 years, with works to upgrade infrastructure at Millbay starting over a year ago.

(ABP) are looking to strengthen the port’s commercial freight capability, increase its green credentials, and especially work with city partners to offer more cruise ship operators to visit the port and city.

“The huge investment in the port will secure the long-term future of the Brittany Ferries Terminal and its services, increase the city’s commercial freight capabilities, and green shipping credentials,” said Mr. Buss.

“Plymouth is gaining an international reputation for its cruise ship welcomes, and developing Millbay Docks to attract more cruise ship visitors will boost the city’s tourism economy.”

The first section walkway arrived aboard the flagship of Brittany Ferries, the MV Pont Aven, direct from Santander in Spain, and the remaining sections will arrive in Portsmouth and arrive in Plymouth by road.

Millbay Docks suffered massively from the Plymouth Blitz of World War Two, and the area around Millbay fell into decline, but now an exciting part of the city’s regeneration and waterfront area.
