An HM Coastguard helicopter was spotted on our live webcams this afternoon above HMS Sutherland winching a sailor from the Type-23 warship and taken to Derriford Hospital.
The crew member was airlifted off the frigate into a Sikorsky helicopter, which landed on the Hoe Promenade, and transferred to a Devon & Cornwall Ambulance.
The dramatic scene was captured in real time on our Westward Shipping News Live streaming cameras.
The sailor suffered serious injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening, said a Royal Navy spokesperson.
