GOODBYE TO THE NORTHUMBERLAND

Plymouth says goodbye to HMS Northumberland early tomorrow morning when Serco Group vessels will tow the Type 23 frigate for the last time in the Sound to a designated location for disposal.

The ship was commissioned in 1992 and has served in various operations across the globe, and the final goodbye after 30 years of proud service to the nation.

On a bright note the modernisation of the Royal Navy’s new builds like HMS Venturer at Rosyth is a clear statement of future intent for the British navy.

You can see the Northumberland on our live webcam around 6:30am.

THE END OF AN ERA FOR HMS NORTHUMBERLAND

A certain respect and a tinge of regret that we won’t see the Northumberland coming and going across the waterfront anymore. It didn’t feel undignified about the ship leaving one last time early this morning with Serco Group teams and others onboard on the ship’s final journey to be scrapped, almost how most ships end their lives.

Going for dismantling is the last bit of value the Northumberland will give for its steel and other fittings that the recycling yards will extract as they perform the last rituals of the vessel.
