GOOD FRIEND AMERA BACK IN TOWN

One of Plymouth’s most regular cruise ship visitors, the MS Amera, arrived in the Sound after 7am this morning. A city pilot boat escorted the German vessel into position and dropped anchor inside the breakwater.

The ship is operated by Phoenix Reisen, a German-based travel agency that also operates a fleet of cruise vessels.

Plymouth is the last stop before she returns to the city of Bremerhaven in northern Germany tomorrow.

The Amera has visited Plymouth several times and left Bremerhaven, Bremen, on the 26th of April for 17 days of cruising around Iceland, Scotland, the Orkney Islands, and Shetland.

Many of the 800 passengers on the MS Amera embarked on shuttle boats to the Barbican Landing Stage and were met by Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors and other city representatives.

Throughout the day the mainly German visitors could be seen in groups visiting the Barbican and Hoe with guides.

The nine-deck ship entered service in 1988, at a cost of nearly £120 million, and was originally called the Royal Viking Sun.

In 2019 ownership of the 204m-long ship was transferred to Phoenix Reisen, and then it underwent refurbishment in Hamburg and was renamed the MS Amera.

The next cruise ship visitor to Plymouth will be the Crystal Serenity on the 21st June, 2025.
