ANTI-SHIP MISSILE UPGRADE ON THE SOMERSET

Westward Shipping News captured some of the first pictures of HMS Somerset back from a visit to Haakonsvern Naval Base in Norway where the Plymouth based Type 23 frigate was equipped with the Naval Strike Missile canisters.

Somerset was spotted on our 24 webcam this morning on its way into Devonport.

Officially called the Maritime Offensive Strike System (MOSS) by the RN, this highly stealthy missile also has land attack capabilities.

The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is a long-range, fifth-generation precision strike anti-ship/land attack cruise missile developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, an aerospace and defence company based in Norway.

The NSM is a successor to the Penguin anti-ship missile and is primarily designed to defeat heavily protected maritime targets in contested environments.

It can also be deployed in a secondary role for land attacks.
