Plymouth’s Serco Tugs put on a water display to greet the flagship of Brittany Ferries, the MV Pont Aven, in the Sound this afternoon.
The special occasion is to celebrate the retirement of Captain Erwoan Le Bourdonnec after 35 years of loyal service with Brittany Ferries.
Rob Giles, the King’s Harbour Master (KHM) for the Port of Plymouth, said: “This week marks the end of an era with the retirement of Brittany Ferries Capt. Erwoan Bourdonnec at the end of this season.”
“He has safely navigated, almost unnoticed, the MV Armorique and MV Pont Aven to and from the Port of Plymouth since 1989, and a staggering 3.6 decades of navigation in all weathers, keeping his vessel, crew, and passengers safe.”
“It is estimated that he has transported, under his care, some 7 million passengers over the years.”
“Captain Erwoan is a shining example of those unsung highly skilled mariners who deliver Port Safety on a daily basis through their skill, professionalism, and modesty,” said Mr. Giles.
“I have already thanked him personally by riding into our port yesterday evening on the bridge of the MV Pont Aven, and I’m sure the whole maritime community in Plymouth will join me in thanking him for his service and wishing him a happy retirement,” he said.
