HMS Triumph, the last Trafalga class submarine, is arriving home to Plymouth this afternoon and will finally decommission her successful role in serving the nation. The submarine was laid down at Barrow Shipyard in February 1987 and commissioned less than 5 years later in October 1991.
The vessel represented the zenith of UK submarine design and construction efficiency, driven by the need to face down the Soviet submarine fleet in the Atlantic. The T-boats, widely acknowledged as the best SSN design of the Cold War, and HMS Triumph was still proving effective in the 2020s.
